Communications Guidelines and Standards 

Purpose of newsletter is to build engagement and community amongst residents of High View Park through dissemination of information impacting the neighborhood while highlighting the diversity and uniqueness of its individuals.

The newsletter serves as the official written voice of the Association and should provide accurate, objective, and nonpartisan descriptions of the Association’s activities. The newsletter is representative of all residents,  e.g content strives to be inclusive of all High View Park residents regardless of age, race, socioeconomic status or other potentially discriminatory or limiting factor.

News items and feature articles:  Content will focus on activities and newsworthy items that impact residents of High View Park and are not limited to those authorized or sponsored by John M. Langston Citizens Association and its members. 

Content:  To focus on a balance of 75 percent news; 25 percent feature/human interest articles.

General guidelines for articles:  Be simple and brief; include the five w’s (who, what, when, where and why).

Deadlines:  All articles should be submitted to the editor by COB on the third Monday of every month.

Word count: While there is no set length for articles, conciseness and brevity is encouraged.  As a general guideline, articles should not exceed 300 words and may be edited as needed.  

Role of editor:  Is to oversee the newsletter content, article submission, design and coordinate production activities and ensure editorial guidelines are followed.  The editor reserves the right to reject articles or postpone their submission to a later date.  The editor also may edit documents to meet grammatical, style and word count parameters.

Sources: All articles should cite sources where appropriate and all quotes should be attributed to their source.  If appropriate sourcing is not included with submissions, the editor reserves the right to exclude the article or ask the author to qualify the article claims.

Bylines:  Each article will include the author’s name in the byline.

Photographs: Are encouraged but not necessary and may not be included due to space limitations.

Advertising and Editorial: The newsletter strives to present unbiased content which is not influenced by its advertisers.  Advertising should be placed at an appropriate distance from related content, e.g. a different 2-page spread from related content. No endorsement is intended for specific products or businesses that are advertised in the HVPN newsletter or website, nor is criticism meant for products not mentioned. Advertisements for companies and products are printed as provided. The authors and the greater Communications Committee do not represent or endorse the quality of any products, information, or other materials displayed, purchased, or obtained as part of an advertisement that appears in the HVPN newsletter or website. The Communications Committee of JMLCA specifically disclaims any liability to advertisers and readers of any kind for loss or damage of any nature whatsoever and however arising, whether due to inaccuracy, error, omission or any other cause, regardless of who is at fault, due to the use of the advertisements or other information herein.
